welcome to the 5th annual beastlake!

The BeastLake is back for the sixth year, and we are bringing back all our runners’ favorite obstacles from past years.  Our 2024 race will feature a “ stay cool” option that includes a ‘slip n slide” type water slide down part of the course, an option to do the balance beam over an inflatable pool and an option to run through a section of sprinklers midway through the race.  All the water features are OPTIONAL and designed to bring an additional fun experience to the race.  We will also be having food trucks at this years race with registered 5K Obstacle Course and 5K Walk/ Run participants receiving food vouchers.

OBSTACLE COURSE 5K

  • The Beastlake Obstacle course is designed to test your total fitness including strength, speed, agility, balance, and endurance. It follows the same 5k course but adds 15 obstacles including old favorites like the ninja wall, slanted steps, spider climb, and floorless room. This race will be chip timed with awards for overall and age group finishers. Experience a new challenge with this fun and physically demanding race.

  • 1. Military crawl. Crawl under a 20 feet long 18” high rope and pvc pipe obstacle.

    2. Spider climb. This has been a favorite obstacle and has been upgraded for 2024. Last year we replaced the ropes with a climbing net that has more cross-sections which provides more handholds and footholds. This year we are doubling the size of the net as well as adding rope to continually improve the obstacle,You must climb up, go over the crossbeam and down the other side to successfully complete. If you are uncomfortable with heights and/or unable to complete the obstacle, you must complete a penalty exercise.

    3. Tire agility drill. New and Improved. This obstacle has been completely revamped for 2024, Instead of the traditional tire agility drill. We have added a different twist. Plywood has been cut to fit and bolted to the tires. Instead of stepping through them, you will hop from tire to tire, with a couple of mini trampolines spaced in between them.

    4. Balance beam. Maintain your balance crossing a 12 foot 4x4. Athletes have two options. They can choose to cross a level beam over an inflatable pool filled with water or an ascending beam over dry ground. Step off the beam and you must complete a penalty exercise.

    5. Hay bale rope swing. Climb atop an approximately 6 ft hay bale, advance to the next hay bale and slide off the second hay bale. New for ‘24 the rope has been lengthened and athletes can use the rope to climb the first hay bale and swinging to the second before sliding off the second.

Jungle Gym Rope Obstacle with Rings. Traverse the rope rings between two trees. Based on feedback from past participants, we have added an additional ring. If you drop and touch the ground before reaching the last ring, you must complete a penalty exercise.

    6. Rope climb. (5KOC only) New for ‘24. Located in the wooded-trail section of the course; competitors must climb a 14 foot rope attached to a tree.

    7. Boulder lift. New for ‘24. (5KOC only). Lift the rock over the wall.

    8. Tire flip. (5K OC only). Flip a large tire 5 times.

    9. Warped wall. All new for 2024. A completely new wall for 2024. The wall retains its same shape but stands 10 feet high. The climbing rope has been removed. This affords most competitors the opportunity to summit the wall as originally designed. This remains an optional obstacle, but a series of drills must be performed if this obstacle is not completed.

    10. Footwork agility drilll (5K OC only). Similar to the past tire agility drill. You must step through a series of ropes attached to a PVC grid inches from the ground. This year there will be two identical rope courses. You can choose the routine course or to be soaked with supper soakers manned by the cheer team as you step through the ropes.

    11. Hay bale hurdles. New and Improved. The old five hay bales have been replaced with more interesting hurdles. The obstacle starts, innocently enough, with the traditional rectangular hay bale hurdle. It is followed by a wall. Stacked hay bales, a taller wall and a round hay bale, all of which increase in height.

Slanted steps. Modified for this year. Grip tape is attached to the steps to improve traction. Jump from side to side without touching the ground.

    12. The Floorless Room. Similar to the spider jump on American Ninja warrior, competitors must use their arms and legs pressed against plywood walls to cross an 8 ft wall section without touching the ground. Walls are slightly angled to give all athletes a chance to successfully complete the obstacle. If your feet touch the ground, you must complete a penalty exercise.

    13. Hay bale mountain. Last but not least, when you are really tired, you must climb over three hay bales. Two form the base with one stacked in the middle. Approximate height is 12 feet. Good news. The finish is downhill. Also, a rope is attached to help all athletes summit the hay bale mountain. Can’t climb over. You know the drill by now. Complete a penalty exercise.

Optional Waterslide. The waterslide will return for 2024. We are currently still evaluating the best course placement. We want to make sure to place this in an area of the course for maximum fun without creating a slick environment for any obstacles.

  • Competitors must not skip any obstacles. The lone exception is the Ninja wall which is optional, but a substantial exercise penalty is assessed for skipping and/or failing to go up and over the wall. An honest effort must be made to complete all obstacles. A penalty exercise must be completed for any obstacle not successfully completed.

Athletes may choose any one of the following penalty exercises for failure to complete any obstacle except the Ninja wall. Athletes may choose the same or a different penalty exercise for subsequent obstacles not successfully completed. Athletes must complete THREE OF THE FOUR penalty exercises for not going over the Ninja wall. No penalty is assessed for skipping the water slide.

  • There will be two starting times participants can choose from 7:45am or 8:15am.

  • $50 (Apr - May 30)
    $55 (May 31 - June 29)
    $65 (June 30 - Race Day)

5k run/walk only

  • The 5k is a cross country course that winds through the EastLake property. It is a rolling course with great views. This will be an official course with electronic timing for the competitive runner. All skill levels are welcome including walkers. We want everyone to get moving and join us in this fun fundraising event for Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy.

  • 8:00 AM

  • $30 (Apr - May 30)
    $35 (May 31 - June 29)
    $40 (June 30 - Race Day)

Family Fun Run & obstacle course

  • The Family Fun Run is a scaled down version of the race. It is 1.5 miles in length and contains 12 obstacles. This run is designed for people who are new to obstacle course racing, and families who want to participate with their children. Basically anyone who wants to try a new fitness experience. The run will not be timed but puts the emphasis on fellowship and participation. This has been one of our most popular events and offers the whole family a fun opportunity to compete together for one low price. Family Pricing is available for families of 3 or more.

    1. Military crawl. Crawl under a 20 feet long, 18 feet high rope and PVC pipe obstacle.

    2. Spider climb. New for 2023. This has been a favorite obstacle but we have improved it this year. Instead of climbing straight up and down, we have angled the ascent and descent. Now shaped like a tent, the climbing experience and safety are both improved. Climb up and over the rope web sandwiched between two trees.

    3. Hay bale rope swing. Climb atop an approximately 6 ft hay bale and swing to the next hay bale.

    4. Tire agility drill. Step through a series of tires.

    5. Balance beam. Maintain your balance crossing a 20 ft log. New for 2023. Athletes have the option to choose either the standard balance beam or the one suspended over an inflatable pool.

    6. Jungle Gym Rope Obstacle with Rings. Traverse five rope rings between two trees.

    7. Hay bale hurdles. Hurdle over 5 rectangular hay bales.

    8. NEW. Optional water slide. Competitors can choose whether to run or slide down a hill.

    9. NEW. Optional sprinkler run. Course temporarily splits and competitors can choose the “stay dry” option or “stay cool run through the sprinklers” option.

    10. Warped wall. 14ft foot warped wall built to the specs of the wall on American Ninja Warrior. This is a bonus obstacle. It is not required but there is a 3:00 time bonus/deduction for successfully going up and over the wall. The fastest way to complete is to run straight up the wall but a rope is attached to assist all athletes in making it over the wall.

    11. Slanted steps. Modified for this year. The slanted steps have been lengthened and anchored to improve this obstacle.

    13. Hay bale mountain. Last but not least, when you are really tired, you must climb over three hay bales. Two form the base with one stacked in the middle. Approximate height is 12 feet. Good news: The finish is downhill!
